Munit is the primary language of a people that lives just west of the city of Madang, the provincial capital. Because the Munit people live close to Madang town, some are familiar with Tok Pisin. Approximately one in four can also read Tok Pisin with comprehension. Thank God that this may enable them to access God's word in Tok Pisin.
Their proximity to the city gives them access to education, business and income opportunities. For example, they are able to sell their livestock, food crops, cocoa and coconuts at the Madang markets or to the supermarkets in Madang. Of all of these, cocoa is the main source of income.
The vast majority of the Munit people are Christian, but they need to understand their faith better.
Munit is related to the Girawa and Kein languages that belong to the people living southwest of Munit land. Thank God that the Girawa New Testament was completed in 1995 and can be accessed online (for example on scripture Earth). Furthermore, literacy is at about 50 per cent for Girawa speakers. It may be that some more well-educated Girawa speakers can also speak Munit and could contribute to a Munit translation project.
Pray that those who can understand the Tok Pisin Bible will share God's word with their people.
Pray that God would thrust out workers to help bring his word to the Munit people in a language that they understand.
Pray for the economic and physical welfare of the Munit people.
